New forms of communication are proliferating, and essentially all stem from or eventually morph into new forms of media. For those of us who grew up when dial telephones were a technological marvel and media consisted of printed newspapers, magazines and AM radio, this is a brave new world. Recently, a study was completed measuring the use of time by 8-18 year olds in this country. It found that all forms of media--television, games, computers, movies, music, smart phones, et. al.--accounted for 11 hours of average daily usage by this tween and teen group, but thanks to multitasking abilities, all of this media absorption was reduced to about seven hours of actual time. Whether this is good news in the tweens/teens ability to process multiple media forms at the same time or bad news in their use of so many waking hours outside (hopefully) of school on these platforms is up to the reader. From the standpoint of investment opportunities, it reinforces our thinking that media and mobility are two of the defining trends in today’s lifestyle by those destined to become next generation leaders of society. Consequently, we have a number of thematic and non-thematic holdings in our portfolio, ranging from “Cocooning” to “3D” to several technology companies poised to capitalize on these trends.
